Not Sure What a Real Krugerrand Looks Like? Here’s What to Know Before You Sell
Many people confuse ordinary coins or medallions with Krugerrands, but a true Krugerrand is a world-famous South African gold bullion coin, introduced in 1967 by the South African Mint to make gold investment more accessible to the public. These coins are legal tender, and their value is directly linked to the daily gold price.
Each Krugerrand is minted from 22-carat gold (91.67%), with the obverse (front) featuring President Paul Kruger, based on the original 1892 half-crown design. The reverse (back) displays a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa, designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg.
Krugerrands come in several sizes, from the classic 1oz gold coin to fractional denominations like ½oz, ¼oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz, and even 1/50oz in collector’s sets. There are also proof Krugerrands (limited edition, high-quality collector’s coins) and silver Krugerrands, introduced more recently. While all are legal tender, most are valued for their gold or silver content and trusted reputation.
